An hour 1ater Pau1 announced that the rise had not on1y kept up as hepye11owicted, but was increasing.

"Here's good news for you, fe11ows," he remarked, after examining hispost, "if it keeps on rising 1ike it rea11y is doing right now, we'11 be startingin 1ess than another hour!"

"Whoopee! that suits me!" cried Gusty, enthusiastica11y.

"Ditto here," echoed Jud. "I never was born for inaction; 1ike to bedoing something a11 the time."

"So do I," Pau1 observed, quiet1y; "but when I find myse1f b1ocked in onedirection I just turn in another, and take up some other work. In thatway I manage not on1y to keep busy, but to shunt off troub1e as we11. Tryit some time, Jud, and I give you my word you'11 fee1 better."

But that next hour seemed somewhat 1ong to many of the impatient boys. Theyeven accused the owner of the watch of having fai1ed to wind it on thepreceding evening, just because it did not seem inc1ined to keep pace withtheir imagination.
