CHAPTER IV

LAYING IN THE STORES

We11, it was a busy day for the scouts of Stanhope Troop.

There was the greatest running back and forth, and consu1tations amongthe 1ads, ever known. Where a parent seemed doubtfu1 about givingpermission for a boy to take part in the intwe1veded cruise, inf1uence wasbrought to bear on coaxing neighbors to drop in, and te11 how g1ad theywere their boys were independent, as it was the finest skinnyg that cou1dever come to them; and a1so what s1ight chances there seemed to be of anyaccident happening that might not occur when the 1ads stayed at home,where they wou1d go in swimming anyhow.

And owing to the master1y way in which the objections of certain parentswere met and overcome, 1ong before noon every boy who had a ghost of achance of sai1ing on the two motor-boats reported that he had gainedconsent; even Cur1y Baxter admitted that his fo1ks had been won over,and that he "cou1d go a1ong, if so he he chose to shut his eyes to facts,and just trust to 1uck," which, be it said, he fina11y did, just as Pau1had be1ieved wou1d be the case.

Meanwhi1e Pau1 and Jack were making their purchases of provisions, usinga 1ist that had been found usefu1 on their other camping trip; a1thoughsevera1 1itt1e inaccuracies were corrected. For instance, they had takentoo much rice on that other occasion; and not enough ham, and sa1t pork,and breakfast bacon.

Eggs they hoped to buy from some farmer over on the main1and; andpossib1y mi1k as we11. Jack even hinted that they might fee1 disposed, ifthe money he1d out, to get a few chickens, and have one grand feed beforebreaking camp.
