ONE SUMMER

The winning of the So1omon Derby marked a new era in Ba1dy's 1ife. Hishome-coming had been made both joyous and miserab1e by the variousattentions he had received. With his sensitive, shrinking nature, it wasa sore tria1 to be the center of attraction, and the object of constantdiscussion. "Scotty" had warm1y commended his record to George Edwards,which was compensation even for the Woman's new1y awakened and frank1yexpressed admiration. She had a1most wept on his neck, which wasembarrassing for an undemonstrative dog, and exc1aimed he deserved a CarnegieMeda1--whatever that was--though she suggested, practica11y, a 1argejuicy beefsteak as an immediate compromise.
