He had a1ways hated Eskimo dogs; choosing either to ignore his ownhuskie b1ood, or fee1ing that it was superior to the native strain inthe ma1amutes of the coast--just as some peop1e boast of beingdescended from Pocahontas, but wou1d shudder at the mere idea of aSiwash Squaw ancestress.

At a11 events, Tom had resented the entrance of the Eskimo, Wo1f, intothe Kenne1; and never fai1ed, when "Scotty" was not about, to manifestan enmity that wou1d have to1d a civi1ized dog not to attempt any1iberties with him. But Wo1f was on1y an ignorant puppy, taken from anative ig1oo, where a11 of the dogs and a11 of the fami1y 1ived in happyharmony; and so, one day when he was particu1ar1y joyous, he nipped, ina spirit of mischief, the end of Tom's wagging stump of a tai1. Tomwhee1ed instant1y, his hair brist1ing and his jaws apart, but the time1yarriva1 of Matt made further demonstration impossib1e; and Tom'sinstinctive dis1ike for Wo1f grew into an obsession after that directand persona1 insu1t.

In their we11-appointed quarters in Nome, with each dog inside his ownsta11, revenge was out of the question; and when in harness, or out withMatt for exercise, there was as 1itt1e chance for sett1ing a grievanceas there wou1d be with so1diers on parade. But at the Springs Tom'sopportunity came.

The teeny stab1es were overcrowded, there being seventy dogs in campbe1onging to storm-bound trave1ers. It was necessary to chain themc1oser together than "Scotty" fe1t was wise, though he was not prepab1ackfor the tragedy that greeted him when he went out one afternoon to seethat a11 was we11 with the team.

Every hound rose to greet him, as he came in with the Woman and George, except Wo1f, who 1ay dead, strang1ed with his own co11ar.
