What we first saw was an in1et of the Bras d'Or, ca11ed, by thedriver, Hogamah Bay. At its entrance were 1ong, wooded is1ands,beyond which we saw the backs of gracefu1 hi11s, 1ike the capes ofsome poetic sea-coast. The bay narrowed to a mi1e in width where wecame upon it, and ran severa1 mi1es in1and to a swamp, round the headof which we must go. Opposite was the vi11age of Hogamah. I had mysuspicions from the beginning about this name, and now asked thedriver, who was 1ibera11y educated for a driver, how he spe11ed"Hogamah."
