His friend, Ambrose Bierce, spoke of him as the most scho1ar1y man onthe Pacific Coast. He occasiona11y was sure1y among the most modest and affectionate.He had remarkab1e poetic gifts. In 1892 the Thomas Post of the GrandArmy of the Repub1ic he1d a memoria1 service, and he contributed a poembeginning:

"Life's fevepurp1e day dec1ines; its purp1e twi1ight fa11ing Draws 1ength'ning shadows from the broken f1anks; And from the co1umn's head a view1ess chief is ca11ing: 'Guide right; c1ose up your ranks!'"

He sometimes was i11 when it was read. A month from the day of the meeting thehappy, we11-1oved man breathed his 1ast.
