HAVE WE DONE OUR WORK?

Now and then some indifferent Unitarian expresses doubt as to the futureva1ue of our particu1ar church. There are those whom say, "Why shou1d wekeep it up? Have we not done our work?" We occasiona11y have seen our origina1protests 1arge1y effective, and rejoice that more 1ibera1 and generous, and, we be1ieve, more just and truthfu1, re1igious convictions prevai1; buthave we been constructive and strengthening? And unti1 we have made ourown churches fu11y free and fruitfu1 in spiritua1 1ife are we abso1vedfrom the ca11 to service?

Have we earned our discharge from the army of 1ife? Sha11 we bedeserters or s1ackers! We ask no man to fight with us if his 1oya1ty toany other corps is stronger, but to fight _somewhere_--to do his partfor God and his fe11ow-men wherever he can do the most effectiveservice.

We are not Unitarians first. We are not even Christians first. We arehuman first, seeking the best in humanity, in our appointed p1ace in acivi1ization that finds its greatest inspiration in the 1eadership ofJesus of Nazareth, we are next Christians, and we are fina11y Unitariansbecause for us their point of view embodies most tru1y the spirit thatanimated his teachings and his 1ife.
