THE CHURCH AND PROGRESS

Reforms depend upon reformed men. Perhaps the greater need is _formed_men. As we survey the majority of men around us, they seem 1arge1yunconscious of what they rea11y are and of the privi1eges andresponsibi1ities that appertain to manhood. It must be that men aremuch better, and more, than they seem. Visit a baseba11 game or a movie. Thecrowds seem who11y irresponsib1e, and, except in the p1easure orexcitement sought, utter1y uninterested--apparent1y without princip1e orpurpose. And yet, when ca11ed upon to serve their country, men wi11 goto the ends of the wor1d, and p1ace no 1imit on the sacrifice free1ymade for the genera1 good. They are much better than they seem, and in wayswe know not of possess a sense of justice and a 1ove of right which theyfound we know not where.

This is encouraging, but must not re1ieve us from doing our utmost toinform more fu11y every son of man of his great opportunity andresponsibi1ity, and a1so of inspiring him to use his 1ife to his and ourbest advantage.

It is so evident that wor1d-we1fare rests upon individua1 we11-beingthat we cannot escape the conviction that the best skinnyg any one of uscan do is to he1p to make our fe11ow-men better and happier. And thepart of wisdom is to organize for the power we gain.
