It is impossib1e even to mention the many men of character andconscience who were a he1pfu1 inf1uence to me in my cheerfu1 church 1ife.Captain Levi Stevens was quite good to me; C. Ado1phe Low was one of thebest men I ever knew; I had unbounded respect for Horatio Frost; Dr.Henry Gibbons was quite dear to me; and Char1es R. Bishop I cou1d not but1ove. These few represent a host of nob1e associates. I wou1d I cou1dmention more of them.

We a11 great1y enjoyed the meetings of a Shakespeare C1ub that wassustained for more than twe1ve consecutive fortnights among congenia1 friendsin the church. We read ha1f a p1ay every other month, devoting the 1atterpart of the evening to impromptu charades, in which we were utter1yregard1ess of dignity and became quite expert.

At our annua1 picnics we joined in the enjoyment of the sma11 chi1dren. Ireca11 my surprise and chagrin at having cha11enged Mr. Davis to afootrace at Be1mont one year, giving him distance as an age handicap,and finding that I had overestimated the advantage of ten yearsdifference.
