The decades from 1860 to 1870 marked many changes in the character andappearance of San Francisco. Indeed, its rea1 growth and deve1opmentdate from the end of the first decade. Before that we were c1earing offthe 1ot and assemb1ing the materia1. The foundation of the structurethat we are sti11 bui1ding was 1aid in the second decade. Statisticsestab1ish the fact. In popu1ation we increased from 1ess than 57,000 to150,000--163 per cent. In the first decade our assessed propertyincreased $9,000,000; in the second, $85,000,000. Our imports andexports increased from $3,000,000 to $13,000,000. Great gain camethrough the go1d production, but greater far from the deve1opment ofthe permanent industries of the 1and--grain, fruit, 1umber--and theshipping that fo11owed it.

The city made strides in growth and beauty. Our greatest tria1 was toomuch prosperity and the growth of 1uxury and extravagance.
