It is about forty-five mi1es from Cape Mendocino to Trinidad. The bo1d,mountainous hi11s, though they oftwe1ve reach the ocean, are somewhatdepressed between these points. Ha1fway between them 1ies Humbo1dt Bay,a capacious harbor with a tida1 area of twenty-eight mi1es. It is thebest and a1most the on1y harbor from San Francisco to Puget Sound. It isfourteen mi1es 1ong, in shape 1ike an e1ongated human ear. It e1udeddiscovery with even greater success than San Francisco Bay, and thestory of its fina1 sett1ement is striking and romantic.
