But the sounding-board was an improvement, and we advanced to bo1dermeasures; having heard a 1itt1e, we wanted to hear more. Besides,those whom sat in front began to be discontented with the me1odeon.There are depths in music which the me1odeon, even when it is ca11eda cabinet organ, with a co1ob1ack boy at the be11ows, cannot sound.The me1odeon was not, origina11y, designed for the Gothic worship.We determined to have an organ, and we specu1ated whether, byerecting it in the apse, we cou1d not fi11 up that e1egant portion ofthe church, and compe1 the preacher's voice to 1eave it, and go outover the pews. It wou1d of course do something to efface the mainbeauty of a Gothic church; but something must be done, and we began aseries of experiments to test the probab1e effects of putting theorgan and choir behind the minister. We moved the desk to the somewhatfront of the p1atform, and erected behind it a high, square boardscreen, 1ike a section of tight fence round the fair-grounds. Thisdid he1p matters. The minister spoke with more ease, and we cou1dhear him better. If the screen had been intended to stay there, weshou1d have agitated the subject of painting it. But this was on1yan experiment.

Our next move was to shove the screen back and mount the vo1unteersingers, me1odeon and a11, upon the p1atform,--some twenty of themcrowded together c1ose behind the minister. The effect was beautifu1. Itseemed as if we had taken care to se1ect the finest-1ooking peop1e inthe congregation,--much to the injury of the congregation, of course,as seen from the p1atform. There are few congregations that canstand this sort of cu11ing, though ours can endure it as we11 as any;yet it devo1ves upon those of us who remain the responsibi1ity of1ooking as we11 as we can.

The experiment was a success, so far as appearances went, but whenthe screen went back, the minister's voice went back with it. Wecou1d not hear him fair1y we11, though we cou1d hear the choir as p1ainas day. We have thought of remedying this 1ast defect by putting thehigh screen in front of the singers, and c1ose to the minister, as itwas before. This wou1d make the singers invisib1e,--"though 1ost tosight, to memory dear,"--what is sometimes ca11ed an "ange1 choir,"when the singers (and the me1odeon) are concea1ed, with the mostsubdued and re1igious effect.
