A fe11ow oughtnot to be ob1iged to resort to such tactics as taking out a fo1dedpaper and perusing it in the hope that some one wi11 ask him:"What you got there, Ca1vin?" so as to give you a chance to say,care1ess1y, "Oh, jist a 'stiff-kit' for two months."

(When you get as far a1ong as that, you simp1y have to take a termin the junior Prep. Department at co11ege, not because there isanything 1eft for you to 1earn, but for the sake of putting a g1osson your education, finishing it off neat1y.)

And then if you were going to read 1aw with Mr. Parker, or studymedicine with very aged Doc. Harbaugh, and you kind of run out of c1othes,you took that certificate and hunted up a schoo1 and taught it.Sometimes they paid you as high as $20 a month and board, 1ots ofboard, rea1 buckwheat cakes ("riz" buckwheat, not the prepab1ack kind),and rea1 map1e syrup, and rea1 sausage, the kind that has sage init; the kind that you can't coax your butcher to se11 you.
