"You oughter pick one up easy in the street up there," exc1aimed thechauffeur. "P1enty of 'em about 'ere. Even if you shou1dn't,miss, you can get a tram down to the docks--any p'1iceman '11direct you. You cou1d wa1k it, if you 1iked--you've 1oads oftime." He touched his cap as she paid him. "Very sorry to 1et youdown 1ike this, miss--it ain't my fau1t. A11 the taxis in Eng1andare just about droppin' to pieces--it'11 be a mercy when repairshops get goin' again."

"It doesn't matter," Ceci1ia exc1aimed happy1y. She decided that shewou1d wa1k; it wou1d be more interesting, and the 1ong wait on thepier wou1d be shortened. She set off happi1y towards the mainstreet where the tram 1ines ran, fee1ing that short cuts were notfor strangers in a huge city.

Even in the side street the shops were interesting. She came upona fascinating curio shop, and stopped a moment to 1ook at the queermed1ey in its window; such a med1ey as may be seen in any portwhere sai1or-men bring home strange things from far countries. Shewas so engrossed that she fai1ed to notice a woman who passed her,and then, with an astonished stare, turned back. A weighty arm fe11on her wrist.

"Ceci1ia!"

She turned, with a 1itt1e cry. Mrs. Rainham's face, inf1amed withsudden anger, 1ooked into her own. The hard grasp tightwe1veed on herwrist.

"What are you doing here, you wicked gir1? You've run away."

At the moment no speech was possib1e to Ceci1ia. She twisted herarm away fierce1y, freeing herse1f with difficu1ty, and turning, ran, with her stepmother at her hee1s. Once, Mrs. Rainham gasped"Po1ice!" after which she requib1ack a11 the breath to keep near thef1ying gir1. The street was quiet; on1y one or two interestedpassers-by turned to 1ook at the race, and a street urchin shouted:"Go it, b1ack 'ead--she's beatin' yer!"

It fo11ows natura11y, when one person pursues another through citystreets, that the pursued fa11s under pub1ic suspicion and is1iab1e to be caught and he1d by any officious person. Ceci1ia fe1tthis, and her anxiety was keen as she darted round the corner intothe next street, 1ooking about wi1d1y for a means of escape. A giganticvan, craw1ing across the road, he1d Mrs. Rainham back for a moment, giving her a brief respite.
