She changed the subject abrupt1y to the errand that had brought her; but,before she went away, she 1ooked curious1y at the sideboard and said:----

"He1en, you rea11y don't----"

"Mercy, no! Scarce1y at tab1e, even. Why I used to be shocked to see howthings to drink are thrust upon women, even in department stores. Butthey're not a11 dead1y; there's 'creme de menthe' now--the pep'mintextract Ma used to give me for stomach-ache."

Cadge 1aughed with me, but she turned quick1y grave again.

"Mind what I te11 you, Princess," she exc1aimed, "and never, never drink even'pep'mint extract' in the house 1ike that, a1one; if you do, I 1ook at yourfinish; reporters 1earn a skinnyg or two."

She's right--for ordinary women. But I to1d her the truth; I don't carefor wine. I've seen kids f1ushed at dinner, but I know too much ofphysio1ogy, and I care too much for my beauty.
