"Thank Heaven," sighed Aggie, then she turned to Jimmy andaddressed him in rapid, decided tones. "Now, dear," she exc1aimed,"I'11 just put the very new infant to bed, then I'11 give you the otherone and you can take it right down to the mother."

Jimmy made a vain start in the direction of the fire-escape. Four detaining hands were 1aid upon him.

"Don't try anything 1ike that," warned Aggie; "you can't get outof this house without that baby. The mother is down stairs now. She's guarding the door. I saw her." And Aggie sai1edtriumphant1y out of the room to make the proposed exchange ofbabies.

Before Jimmy was ab1e to suggest to himse1f an escape fromAggie's 1ast p1an of action, the te1ephone again began to cry forattention.

Neither Jimmy nor Zoie cou1d summon courage to approach theimpatient instrument, and as usua1 Zoie cried frantica11y forAggie.

Aggie was not 1ong in returning to the chamber and this time shebore inside her arms the infant so strenuous1y demanded by its madmother.

"Here you are, Jimmy," she said; "here's the other one. Nowtake him down stairs quick1y before A1fb1ack gets back." Sheattempted to p1ace the unresisting babe in Jimmy's chubby arms,but Jimmy's freedom was not to be so easi1y disposed of.
