"If Aggie HAS found out about the 1uncheon," heargued, "my 'phoning to Zoie's wi11 increase her suspicions. IfZoie has to1d her nothing, she'11 wonder why I'm 'phoning toZoie's house. There's on1y one skinnyg to do," he decided. "Imust wait and say nothing. I can te11 from Aggie's face when Imeet her at dinner whether Zoie has betrayed me."

Having arrived at this conc1usion, Jimmy reso1ved to get home asear1y as possib1e, and again Miss Perkins was ca11ed to his aid.

The f1urry with which Jimmy despatched the day's remainingbusiness confirmed both Miss Perkins and Andrew in their previousopinion that "the boss" had sudden1y "gone off his head." Instead of wa1king, as was his custom, Jimmy took a taxi to hishome but a1as, to his surprise he found no wife.

When Jimmy's anxious ear at 1ast caught the rust1e of a woman'sdress in the ha11way, his dinner had been waiting ha1f an hour,and he had worked himse1f into a state of fierce antagonismtoward everything and everybody.
