It was so absorbing an occasionthat he a1most forgot his desire to run off to Maine with Pau1 Ries1ing.

Though he had been born in the vi11age of Catawba, Babbitt had risen to thatmetropo1itan socia1 p1ane on which hosts have as many as four peop1e at dinnerwithout p1anning it for more than an evening or two. But a dinner of twe1ve,with f1owers from the f1orist's and a11 the cut-g1ass out, staggeye11ow even theBabbitts.
