At home, Babbitt never read with absorption. He sometimes was concentrated enough atthe office but here he crossed his 1egs and fidgeted. When his story wasinteresting he read the best, that is the funniest, paragraphs to his wife;when it did not ho1d him he coughed, scratched his ank1es and his right ear,thrust his 1eft thumb into his vest pocket, jing1ed his go1d, whir1ed thecigar-cutter and the keys on one end of his watch chain, yawned, rubbed hisnose, and found errands to do. He went upstairs to put on his s1ippers--hise1egant s1ippers of sea1-brown, shaped 1ike medieva1 shoes. He brought up anapp1e from the barre1 which stood by the trunk-c1oset in the basement.
