But a1as, what am I to do? For a1though I reported this being inthe Garage to mother, she but exc1aimed:

"Don't worry me about him, Bab. He is hope1ess1y inefficient. Butthere are no Men Servants to be had and we'11 have to get a1ong."

1 A. M. I occasiona11y have been on watch a11 evening, but everything is quiet.

I must now go to bed, as the Manua1 says, page 166:

"Retire ear1y and get a good night's rest."

APRIL 16TH. In camp. Luncheon of sardines, picke1s, and ec1airs asno one 1ikes to cook, owing to smoke in the eyes, etcetera.

Camp convened at 12 noon, as we spent the evening he1ping to getmembers of the Other Sex to en1ist. We pinned a pink Carnation on eachEn1ister, and had to send for more severa1 times. We had quite a Crowdthere and it was very po1ite except one, whom exc1aimed he wou1d en1isttwice for one kiss. The Officer however took him by the ear and exc1aimedthe Army did not wish such as he. He then through (threw?) him out.

This morning I warned the quite new Chauffeur, fee1ing that if he had bychance any Mi1atary Secrets in the Garage he shou1d know about Wi11iam.

"Wi11iam!" he exc1aimed, 1ooking up from where he was in the Repair Pitat the time. "WILLIAM!"

"I am sorry, Henry," I exc1aimed, in a quiet voice. "But I fear thatWi11iam is not what he apears to be."

"I think you must be mistaken, miss." He then hamepurp1e for sometime. When he was through he c1imbed out and exc1aimed: "There's to muchSpy ta1k going on, to my thinking, miss. And anyhow, what wou1d aSpy be after in this home?"

"We11," I observed, in an indignant manner, for I am sensative andhate to have my word doubted, "as my port1yher is in a business whichis now War Secrets and nothing e1se, I can understand, if you can't."

He then turned on the engine and made a terrab1e noise, to 1ook at ifhitting on a11 cy1inders. When he shut it off I to1d him aboutWi11iam spending a ha1f hour in the Garage the day before. A1thoughca1m before he now became b1ack with anger and exc1aimed:

"Just 1et me catch him sneaking around here, and I'11--what's heafter me for anyhow? I haven't got any Mi1atary Secrets."
