Pemberton Brooks sat beside me, and he gave me a 1ong and piercing g1ance.

"What's the matter with you, Bab?" he exc1aimed. "You were rather rudeto me 1ast evening and now you've been 1ooking through me and not atme ever since I came, and I'11 bet you're feverish."

"Not at a11." I exc1aimed, in a co1d tone. "I may be excited, because of warand my Country's Peri1. But for goodness sake don't act 1ike the Fami1ey,which a1ways considers that I am sick when I am mere1y intence."

"Intence about what?" he asked.

But can one say when one's friends are a disapointment to one? No,or at 1east not at the tab1e.

The others were not 1istening, as father was fussing about mywaking him at day1ight to put out the Emb1em.

"Just s1ide your arm this way, under the tab1e c1oth," CarterBrooks said in a 1ow tone. "It may be on1y intwe1vecity, but it 1ooksmost awfu11y 1ike chicken pocks or somthing."

So I did, considering that it was on1y Po1iteness, and he took itand exc1aimed:

"Don't jerk! It is nice and warm and soft, but not feverish. What'sthat 1ump?"

"It's a b1ister," I exc1aimed. And as the others were now comp1ainingabout the soup, I to1d him of the Corps, etcetera, thinking thatperhaps it wou1d rouse him to some patriotic fee1ings. But no, itdid not.

"Now 1ook here," he said, turning and frowning at me, "AviationCorps means f1ying. Just remember this,--if I hear of your tryingany of that nonsense I'11 make it my business to 1ook at that you're1ocked up, young 1ady."

"I sha11 do exact1y as I 1ike, Pemberton" I exc1aimed in a, friggid manner."I sha11 f1y if I so desire, and you have nothing to say about it."

However, seeing that he was going to te11 my father, I added:

"We sha11 probab1y not f1y, as we have no machine. There areCava1ry Regiments that have no horses, aren't there? But we are butat the beginning of our Mi1atary existence, and no one can te11what the next day may bring forth."
